biographical details

⍲	AGE FIVE Owns a teddy bear named Kukalaka and takes him everywhere. Eventually he becomes worn and torn enough that his mother says she's going to throw him away. Jules takes it upon himself to re-stuff and stitch up the toy, and Kukalaka becomes his first ever patient. He keeps the bear from here on out, into adulthood.
⍲	AGE SIX Jules has fallen behind the rest of his classmates in comprehending even simple things that they take for granted. His parents focus on this and become concerned, enough so that Jules can tell they are disappointed in him. He's also smaller and more awkward than other kids his age. His parents decide to take him to Adigeon Prime and put him in a hospital where he undergoes a series of treatments over the course of two months, known as "accelerated critical neural pathway formation," which is a method of genetic engineering that involves the resequencing of his DNA. His IQ, hand-eye coordination, reflexes, vision, stamina, height, and weight are all altered and "enhanced." Jules is unaware exactly of what went on and doesn't find out until later, only knows that he's doing well in his new school now and his parents are proud of him.
⍲	AGE FIFTEEN Julian discovers what his parents had done to him, and is devastated and angered by the realization. He believes that at six years old his parents decided he was a failure. From this point on he no longer goes by the name Jules, deciding that Jules Bashir died in that hospital when he was six, and Julian Bashir was created in his place.
⍲	AGE FIFTEEN THROUGH EIGHTEEN (HEADCANON) Julian goes through a brief rebellious phase after learning about what his parents did. His grades fall, his relationship with sex begins, and he experiments with many different things. He gets into tennis, enjoys the adrenaline of playing, and the immediate gratification of having a cheering audience when he does well is rather nice to boot. And Julian does very well in tennis. His grades don't slip for long, as Julian finds he (still) can't actually stand his parents being disappointed in him. He keeps them up, but keeps the tennis up as well up until around the time he graduates and has to make a decision. The combination of knowing his parents wouldn't approve of him choosing professional sports over a more intelligence-based career like medicine, and the calling and instinct he's felt to heal and save others since his much younger years, both ultimately influence his decision to give up a future career in tennis and pursue medicine instead. He knows that's where he'll do the most good, and the option of going into Starfleet Medical will allow for the action and adventure he seeks as well.
